My Giftastic Pitch Wars Mentor Bio (AKA Pick Me, Pick Meeee!)

Helloooo, everyone! I thank you all for coming here to check out my Pitch Wars mentor bio. 🙂 Since I am a huuuuge FRIENDS nerd, I figured it might be fun to tell you why you should pick me using FRIENDS gifs.

(If you hate FRIENDS, we cannot be friends.)

(Just kidding.)

First of all, I LOVE that you guys are writing with the intention of being published. I seriously think that’s the coolest thing ever. So I won’t ever chop and slash your ego to shreds. Okay?

That being said, do expect frank critique from me. I will be brutally honest because I think every artist deserves the honor of brutal feedback (It helps us grow! And thrive! And makes us want to stab ourselves in the eyes, but it really does that other stuff, too…). However, I will also be sure to nurture and support *your* vision for your book.
This is totally gonna be us:

(And sometimes, because I’m a little bit of a grammar Nazi, I might say this:)
But that’s neither here nor there…

Secondly, I’ve self-published and recently accepted a deal with Grand Central’s new adult imprint, so I sorta know a lot of the ins and outs of writing novels that sell (both to readers and to agents/editors). I can help you make sure your novel gets there, too! And at the end of it all, we’ll be like this:

Now I bet you’re wondering what genres I’d like to mentor. I’m solidly in the adult category. Here’s what I’m looking for specifically:

1. Adult women’s fiction–commercial, comedic, or upmarket. I’m a rabid fan of everything from Jodi Picoult to Sophie Kinsella to things like Shine, Shine, Shine by Lydia Netzer. It’s hard to go wrong with me and women’s fiction.

2. Adult sci-fi, as long as it’s got: (a) a strong female (and/or diverse) protagonist and (b) is LOW on the hard technology part of things. I love robots and AI and spaceships as much as the next person, but I’m not so fond of reading long descriptive paragraphs about the inner workings of machines.

3. Adult literary or contemporary fiction (especially dark for the latter). I love experimental fiction, or fiction that doesn’t fit into any neat boxes. If it has amazing character development and at least a loose plot, I’m there.

4. Adult paranormal/paranormal romance. I specifically ask that you not send fantasy my way, as I’m not sure I’d be the best person to read it. However, I *love* a good paranormal (and paranormal romance). For the sake of the market, I ask that your paranormal not be vampires or werewolves. I love these stories, but sadly, not many agents or editors want them anymore. No erotica, please.

5. Adult thrillers and supernatural horror. I’m not so interested in mysteries or detective stories, but if you have a good thriller–especially one with strong psychological elements–I am SO THERE. With horror, if it’s psychological or supernatural, I need it in mah face! But please, no gore or “gross” horror.

Note for all genres: Bonus points if your MC is diverse! This means an ethnic minority, disabled, or LGBTQI.

And there you go! If you’ve come this far and think you want to pitch to me, let me say this–
And if you decide you’d rather pass, I’ll be like this…

That’s me in a giftastic nutshell. 🙂 If you have any comments, leave ’em below! And please check out the other mentors in this blog hop. Thanks for reading and I hope to have some of your stories in my inbox soooon!

    Popes in a Volkswagen!

Aka, I love Friends, this post is the best.

    • S.K.Falls

Woot! You just can’t go wrong with Friends. 😀

  • M. A. Nicholson

Would it be wrong to submit just to get in on that big hug gif?

    • S.K.Falls

Haha, free group hugs for all! <3

  • Are you open to NA queries or strictly adult? Only asking since that’s the category you’re being pubbed in (congratulations!).

    • S.K.Falls

Hmm, looks like WordPress ate my first comment. I’m totally open to NA (I didn’t specifically state it because most NA out there is romance) as long as it’s in one of the genres I specify above. 🙂

      • S.K.Falls

Oh, and thank you! Very excited to be an official hybrid now.

  • Heather

Yay! I’m so excited to have found you and look forward to submitting.

    • S.K.Falls

Huzzah!! Look forward to seeing it in mah inbox. <3

  • Leslie Wood

I don’t know everything we can ask here but, with a rejection I received, the agent advised me that my story was more women’s commercial fiction with some magic. Since that time researching I believe it would fall into Urban fantasy. (Real world with magic and witches) It has a little of everything, romance, mystery, magic. Do you think that would fit into your wishlist?

    • S.K.Falls

I don’t think I’m the best person to read urban fantasy, since it tends to have more action and fighting than I enjoy in my paranormals or women’s fiction… 🙂

      • Leslie Wood

See that is the exact reason I’m having such difficulty with Genre. Not as much action or fighting as I would expect for an urban fantasy. Thank you for responding. Still not sure how to classify my story which is so not good. 🙂 Thank you.

        • S.K.Falls

Yes, it can be really hard to categorize books that are genre mash-ups! Do you have comp titles for your book? That can help pin it down for agents/editors (and mentors, ha).

  • Terry

Hi S.K. I read through what you’re looking for and would like to know if psychological thriller with some horror elements would peak your interest. Think Silence of the Lambs meets Basic Instinct.

    • S.K.Falls

Terry, that sounds amazeballs! Sign me up!

  • Amanda

Love your friends gifs! Any interest in Regency Romance?

    • S.K.Falls

Sorry, that’s not my thing, but there are so many awesome adult romance mentors!

  • Giora

Are you interested in contemporary commercial women fiction about 23 yrs old Mexican woman and her journey to find a husband, set mostly in Mexico? Thanks.

    • S.K.Falls

As stated above, you can’t go wrong with women’s fiction and me! And bonus for diverse characters/setting. As long as it pulls me in, I’m golden. 🙂

  • Amber Daulton

I see above that you like romance if it’s paranormal but not romantic suspense. My manuscript is an Adult romantic suspense with strong sexual elements, naughty language and a hero’s who’s on parole. It’s not erotica but it goes beyond spicy.
Do you think this would be a good fit for you?
    Thanks a lot,
    Amber Daulton

PS – In no way to sway your answer, I’m a HUGE Friends fan. I own all 10 seasons, a few Best Of dvds, the card game from the early 2000s and I have a habit of saying ‘I KNOW!’ thanks to Monica Gellar. 🙂

    • S.K.Falls

Well, then, you get my obsession perfectly! 😀 With regards to the romantic suspense, alas, I’m afraid I wouldn’t be the best person to read your manuscript. But I wish you all the best and hope you find that perfect mentor!

      • Amber Daulton

LOL! I totally get the obsession.
That’s okay. Thank you so much for your response. 🙂

  • Kelly

Are you open to women’s fiction with a heavy romance sub-plot?
And could I BE any more excited?

    • S.K.Falls

Haha, I’m glad you’re excited! Not sure what you mean by “heavy romance subplot.” Are we talking contemporary romance? If so, then no, sorry, I wouldn’t be the best fit. 🙁 But I suggest looking at Brighton Walsh!

      • Kelly

        Thanks for answering! 🙂

  • Kim B.

How do you feel about humorous crime fiction with a strong female MC and lots of quirky rural folk? Sort of Justified meets Carl Hiaasen.

    • S.K.Falls

      Hi Kim,

Sorry, humorous crime fiction’s not really my cup of tea. I wish you all the best, though!

  • Guest

This will totally be the moment that SK reads my sub! *firm nod*

  • Are you planning on giving feedback to all of your potential mentees? I know I would appreciate even just a line or two. 🙂 Thanks again for sharing your time and expertise!

    • skfalls

      Hi Angela,

Yes, all entrants will receive a short email explaining my reasoning for passing. 🙂 Good luck!

      • Excellent! That will be helpful. 🙂 Good luck to you as well. I don’t envy the choices you will be making over the next couple of weeks.
